The Wedding Cake

When choosing your wedding cake there are a few things you need to consider; the number of guests, style traditional or modern, wedding theme and colour, flavour and not forgetting your budget.

Traditionally the wedding cake was used in western cultures to symbolise the uniting of the two families and the commitment of the couple. Gypsy's have a wedding cake and then two extra cakes for each set of parents to take away and share with their families after the celebration.

By tradition, the wedding cake has a fruit filling and is decorated with royal icing and the smallest tier is kept and saved for the christening of the married couple's first child. However, today most people choose a sponge cake in a variety of flavours with a smooth soft icing. Some even have a different flavour for each tier. A more modern and increasingly popular design is to have a large display of cup cakes. Giving you a cake for each guest and saving time for your catering team on cutting the cake for the toast. Some couples have been known to place the cup cakes into cellophane bags tied with ribbon to give as favours instead of buying extra gifts.

You will need to visit a variety of bakers and find one that is happy to create a cake of your dreams. Make sure that you look through lots of brochures and magazine to get an idea of what you really want. When you do find the right baker for you, make sure that they will deliver and set the cake up on the day, at your chosen venue. This will be one less job for you or a member of your family to do on the run up to your wedding. Also make sure you preview your cake before the big day, making sure it is exactly how you imagine it to be.

If your budget can not stretch to a specialist baker, there are a variety of shops that provide excellent cakes with stylish and modern designs, such as Waitrose and Marks and Spencer's. Most of them are available online, so you can sit and browse through their selection and then order online and collect from your nearest store. You will probably need to order at least twenty one days before your wedding day. It is a good idea to collect two or three days before your wedding, allowing you to check that it is the correct design and that there are not any imperfections, it's also one less job the day before your wedding.
